I loved Karen Bernard.  We were in Mr. Gould's English class together for two years, and we thought he was the best English teacher.  We also rode the train one Saturday up to San Francisco, and walked around China town, and were so excited to buy a pair of earrings! It's hard to believe she is gone.

Alice Helen Frahm (Masek)

Alice Masek here, and while we were at Sequoia, Karen invited me by her home one day, to see her art.  Because I was doing music, I didn't know much about the visual art program, and was amazed and awed to find Karen painting a very good copy of Van Gogh's "Starry Night!".   Wow!  I couldn't imagine how a person could do such a beautiful copy of a famous work!   I would love to talk with Karen now about how it feels to line up one's artistic talent with the Great Ones.  I wonder how much art Karen kept doing as her life unfolded.  I have done giant papercutting of Leonardo Da Vinci's Last Supper, at 30 feet long by about 6 feet tall, at 17 feet long by about 3 feet tall, and even at 4 feet long and 10 inches tall!  (Different sizes for different settings and uses, but bearing the same spirit.)   Sorry you are gone, Karen.  I would have loved to see you at our reunion. You are missed.  Alice Helen (Frahm) Masek
