Emily was my friend. I remember her swinging on the monkey bars in the kindergarten playground. Remember doing our hair in the girls gym during lunch hour—hers always perfect, mine never cooperating. Shopping at the Stanford Shopping Center, browsing Kepler’s Books on weekends, trolling the SF airport, or drinking coffee in some café after a foreign film. We had dreams that I’ve forgotten now. But I found her high school picture and on the back she’d written: “Keep an eye out for that rich millionaire.” Funny that is certainly one of my unpursued goals. Emily was beautiful, talented, kind and mysterious. I’m sad she is gone.
