Gene had the locker next to me in PE and we took quite a few classes together. I remember Gene as a nice guy, good athlete, and decent student. His killing by the RCPD a couple of years after graduation was a shock to everyone who knew him. Sure, he was doing something wrong, breaking into Sequoia actually, but there is no excuse for shooting an unarmed person fleeing a property crime. Rest in peace Gene. You deserved better.

Thinking of how Gene died still gets me outraged. He was a good person and there was/is no justification for what was done to him.
