STILL CRAZY AFTER ALL THESE YEARS

Four years at Sequoia prepared me well for life. I enjoyed many different experiences and real diversity in the staff and student body. Many friends I don't see often, or not at all, still fill my thoughts. Bob Anderson played a big role in my junior year; he took me duck hunting, and forced me to box, keeping my head on straight during a rough time for our family. Marino Mangiola taught me soccer, and I went on to play goalie at Humboldt State.

I worked summers for the US Forest Service during college and spent a summer commercial fishing. After graduation I was accepted to the Teacher Corps to get a Masters and credential. Life in the mountains of Trinity County and the lure of wildland firefighting all over the west made me decide to make my stand in Hayfork, California. Forty-eight years later, I think I made a good choice.

I spent ten years chasing fires, then marriage changed my course. I still spent many a night sleeping on ash-covered hillsides, but most of my time was spent administering timber- sale contracts; working in the woods every day overseeing logging operations.

As a teacher and a forester, working paycheck to paycheck, my wife of forty years, Becky, and I built a home on our fifteen acres after starting with the trees on the stump. Now, 39 years later, we have a great place, thanks to good friends and long days. We had no kids of our own, but Becky has a knack for bringing home strays and providing sanctuary for family and friends. The guest house and extra loft provided a home for Becky's Mom and I built a house for my Mom. NOW it's time to downsize and see the country. No more horses, no more mules, sold all my cows, the tractor's for sale, but not the boat.

By God, were movin’ to town. I’ll still hunt birds with my dog, and take the kids fishing. I plan to spend a lot of time shooting clay pigeons and getting good at poker. I’ll still do a few weddings and speak well of lost friends when they pass, and auction off pies or mules in a race. I write cowboy poetry and spend as much time on the beach as I can. I spent my life protecting the forest, now I plan to sit in the sand and make sure nobody messes with the ocean.

Come sit with me, old friends.

In the Fall of the Year

by Stan Stetson

Hunt elk in the Rockies in the fall of the year.
Reflect on our lives, our joys and our fear.

The weather’s a factor and not enough sleep.
The trails are narrow, icy, and steep.

Ride out in the darkness. Stay till day’s end.
Wolves and the Grizz around any bend.

A guy needs a horse, surefooted and true.
One who stays under, whatever you do.

The elk may be there, but likely as not,
Hunt hard all day and never a shot.

Then once in a while, things happen just right.
The bull you have hunted is now in your sight.

The bullet well-placed, the bull doesn’t rise.
The whole camp’s impressed; you’re slightly surprised.

Now gutting and skinning and quarters to pack.
Meat slung on a decker crowned by a large rack.

Back in your tent with whiskey and fire,
Laughter and friendship and just one desire.

Hunt elk in the Rockies in the fall of the year.
Reflect on our lives, our joys and our fear.

School Story

Young Life!. Going to Malabu Canada with Andy Elliott and coming back and starting Young Life at Sequoia. At 16 you just didn't know vespers, at the overlook, was the best place to get to know girls. Not necessarily, in the Biblical sense. Still have a relationship with a girl, family and God. Organized religion, not so much. Tim Hansel and Pam Givens were great role models and mentored many of us during those formative years.
I ran a Young Adult Conservation Corps program for two years for the Forest Service. I tried to pass on some of the life lessons and guiding wisdom I learned from folks like Pam and Tim to the 16-23 year old kids I took into the woods each day.

So I moved to Redding after 48 years in Hayfork. Bought the land in 1977 built two houses on that piece and a house for my Mom on a 5 acre parcel next to sister Jan's. Knew one guy in Hayfork when I moved there. Ended up with my sister, niece, her dead husbands sister, sister Patti's x husband, my Mom, Becky's Mom, her brother 2 nieces and nephew, older sister, younger sister, husband and nephew.
Both Mom's have passed and it is time for the families to stop calling collect. It's me time for Uncle Stan.
Sold out to two x Marines who are gonna grow some weed to supplement disability retirement. Happy I got enough to buy Redding place free and clear. Close enough to services to ride out the years till old folks home or good whiskey and a cold nite on a Mountain with of a view of this wonderful world.
Check out the new place on zillow. 12754 Encanto Way Redding. Ten minutes minutes off I 5 with two guest rooms and room for RV. Twenty mins to Shasta Lake. Stop by.

Salvage logging wind thrown timber, Nice Sugar Pine log for boards, for homes, for dreams. Stan explaining to cat skinner why he should take care in protecting the baby trees.
It's different now, they just let it all burn up. More trees burnt in the last 20 years than we have logged since 1910. Hell of a deal?

Cruising big timber in the snow. Cruised my last sale in 2005 on the same mountain I cut fire lines and fell hardwoods in 1968. Over time the ground got steeper!!!
